description Peak Season: 05/15 to 09/15 Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, prior to its inclusion into California State Parks in 1960, was a private resort owned by Reinhold and Jeanne Bothe, whose family bought the land in 1929. The resort, called Paradise Park by the Bothes, was in operation from 1935 to 1959. It included a grand lodge that touted a dancehall, a pool (still in operation today) and an 80-foot bar proclaimed to be the longest in the world. The Bay-area elite would even fly in and land at the resort's airstrip located across the street (present-day and Wine-Country-famous Highway 29.) Nestled in the redwoods and giant Douglas firs in the Mayacamas Mtn. foothills above the long-gone lodge, and along the southern bank of Ritchey Creek, were many rustic cabins for the resort's guests. Only five of those cabins remain, and three of these historic cabins have been renovated and restored to their former 1930s' rustic woodland splendor -- but they now offer modern amenities for guests. Funding and work on the restorations was done by the park's operator, Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District. Along with the cabins, there are 10 yurts and 48 campsites within the park grounds and are available for camping. In the heart of Napa Valley, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park is a 1900 acre park offering year-round activities, including hiking, picnicking and swimming (weekends in summer). Visitors can follow hiking trails along Ritchey Creek, walk among Redwood tree groves, or climb to a beautiful vantage point on Coyote Peak. A 30-minute hike along the History Trail leads to nearby Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park. The mill was built in 1846 and is still operating today and is open weekends for tours. Check the State Parks website for additional information on the weather, suggested day hikes, or to see the park brochure, campground map, park photos, video, and more.
